Strobilanthes dyerianus is an eye catching small shrub growing to 1m high.  It is grown for its foliage, the stunning leaves shimmer with iridescent shades of purple and silver.  The flowers are a pale mauve and they appear in winter, while in flower the leaves do lose their strong colouring.  A lightly shaded position is ideal.  Strobilanthes dyeriana is easy to grow from cuttings.  Plant in a warm position in the garden as it is frost tender.  This tropical plant has been growing in my garden for many years; it is a strong and reliable grower in Sydney gardens.  Strobilanthes were first grown here in 1851.
